Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, the Caltrans Landscape Maintenance Leadworker helps the supervisor plan and schedule the work of the crew. In the field, oversees and leads the work of the crew engaged in highway landscape and maintenance work. The incumbent may be required to work overtime including nights and weekends and will be required to work night shifts during winter storm conditions. The incumbent will be required to respond to emergency call-outs. May be loaned to other cost centers/units. This position is represented under collective bargaining.

Oversees and leads the work of the crew engaged in a wide variety of landscape maintenance work such as, but not limited to, spraying chemicals, spray truck and tanker operations; pruning, planting, irrigation repairs, weed and brush removal using a variety of hand and power tools, i.e. chainsaw, chipper, rake, shovel, broom, pitchfork, handsaw, weed eater, litter picker, etc. Duties include manual, mechanical, and chemical vegetation control, and other fire prevention activities within State right-of-way. As needed, will operate various maintenance equipment such as end-dump trucks from 2-10 cu. yds., with either automatic or manual transmissions and may be equipped with plows and sanders. May occasionally operate front-end loaders, vactor, mowers, rollers, equipment trailers and other related vehicles while performing assigned duties. Will set and remove lane closures using early warning signs, cones, flares, cone trucks, barrier vehicles, and Shadow Trucks. The incumbent will also be required to perform manual labor as needed.

Operates a computer and keeps records of personnel, equipment and materials used. Leads crew in repairing, maintaining and cleaning equipment, and crew and work areas.
