Job Description

Responsibilities and Overview:

The Marketing and Events Coordinators are key members of the wider marketing and events team. They work with the General Manager, Events Director, and Children’s Director to support the store’s social media, subscriptions, partnerships, and other marketing initiatives as well as leading and promoting events. They are heavily involved in maintaining Books Are Magic’s public-facing brand and communicating store initiatives to staff and to relevant community partners. Throughout a given week, responsibilities include compiling weekly newsletters, updating the content calendar, updating the website, posting to various social channels, facilitating author signings, rolling out partnership initiatives, and generally supporting the store with projects as they arise, as well as pitching and contributing to projects of their own. The Marketing and Events Coordinator needs to be able to go with the flow of things happening at any moment but stay hyper organized.

Daily Tasks:

  • Bringing creative ideas to capture customer engagement in store and online.
  • Communicating with supervisors, managers, marketing team, and other staff to maintain an appropriate balance between marketing work and working the floor as a bookseller (shelving, answering phones, customer checkout + recommendations).
  • Compiling weekly/bi-weekly newsletters
  • Posting to Instagram, as well as posting to other social media channels professionally and regularly.
  • Updating the Linktree to stay current to the IG grid and merch products
  • Website maintenance
    • Build new web lists or pages as needed for displays, fundraisers, and partnerships
  • Supporting pre order campaigns and author signings
    • Communicating with floor staff about what campaigns are ongoing and when signings will take place
    • Staying up to date on the Preorders spreadsheet
  • Helping to facilitate and promote the Monthly Magic subscription program
  • Communicating new and ongoing partnerships to customers, via social media and in-store signage and displays
  • Books Are Magic blog support
    • Generate original blog ideas
    • Copy-edit, draft, and publish blog posts via Squarespace
  • Leading evening events in-store and offsite 1-2 times per week, and assisting with kids events as needed
  • Help to plan and implement celebrations + non-author specific events such as Independent Bookstore Day, Banned Books Week etc.
  • Supporting supervisors in facilitating open/close.
  • Being on call to open/close when needed. Being an approachable and knowledgeable person for booksellers to go to for questions or with content ideas.

Weekly Flow:

Office days will happen as scheduled by the General Manager. When staffing needs arise on these days, the Marketing Coordinator should communicate with supervisors to support the floor during critical moments.

Events and Marketing meetings will happen weekly on Tuesdays.

Subscription meetings happen on a monthly basis with the Events team and the General Manager.

Weekly Marketing meetings with the Marketing Team to build out the upcoming content calendar and delegate tasks.

Compensation: $46,800 to $51,000 with Benefits
Schedule: Tuesday-Saturday, 40 hours/week.
