Job Description

JOB SUMMARY: The Manager of Pharmacy is responsible for the coordination and control of the Pharmacy Service throughout the hospital; maintenance of the policies and procedures that assure safe administration, control, storage and use of medications and IV solutions. He/she is responsible for management of the Pharmacy staff; financial decisions including inventory control and the budgeting process; interactions with physicians and other departments concerning quality of care and education; and any other functions concerned with patient care and operations of the Pharmacy consistent with policies and procedures of the hospital and State and Federal laws. This position reports to the Chief Nursing Officer.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING
1. Current pharmacist license from the Texas Board of Pharmacy.
2. Post-baccalaureate PharmD from an accredited college of pharmacy
3. Previous experience as a Pharmacy Director/Manager in a hospital environment for at least five years or current documentation of comparable clinical, personnel and financial management experience.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Directs development, implementation, and maintenance of clinical pharmacy services.
2. Facilitates the development and implementation of treatment guidelines, protocols, formulary changes, and critical pathways as approved by appropriate committees.
3. Coordinates the selection and safe use of alternative medications in response to medication shortages.
4. Supports the pharmacy's pharmacoeconomic efforts. Reviews the use of targeted medications for compliance with current pharmacoeconomic programs.
5. Monitors medication therapy regimens for allergies, contraindications, drug-drug interactions, drug-food interactions, drug-laboratory test interactions, adverse drug reactions, appropriateness of drug and dose, and therapeutic duplications.
6. Provides accurate adequate and timely drug information to the professional staff.
7. Publishes a pharmacy newsletter for physicians and other health professionals.
8. Provides training and education to pharmacists.
9. Supervises and instructs pharmacists and pharmacy students.
10. Prepares and presents drug reviews, medication use evaluation criteria, antibiotic sensitivity reports, adverse drug reaction reports and pharmacy interventions summary to Pharmacy & Therapeutic Committee.
11. Collects and analyzes microbiology data and creates an antibiogram annually.
12. Participates in community educational programs.
13. Reviews the performance and documentation of clinical activities of all pharmacists.
14. Coordinates policies and procedures for clinical activities.
15. Establishes productive, collaborative relationships with staff members and within the community.
16. Performs staff pharmacists duties when needed
17. Maintains regular attendance.
18. Performs other duties as assigned or required.
