JOB TITLE: Psychiatrist

DEPARTMENT: Student Affairs

REPORTS TO: Associate Director, Student Health and Counseling Services

SCHEDULE: Contract (12 hours per week), Monday-Friday between 9 am-5 pm, September through May, Onsite

SALARY: $200/hour

POSITION SUMMARY: 

Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Student Health and Counseling Services, the Psychiatrist will provide student-centered mental health services and medication management to a diverse community of SVA students. The psychiatrist will collaborate with interdisciplinary staff and provide direct clinical care to students. The psychiatrist will provide psychiatric evaluation, health promotion, and appropriate psychiatric referrals to undergraduate and graduate students.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Patient Care

  • Provide individual psychiatric care for students presenting with mental health concerns, including conducting evaluations, diagnoses, treatment, and management of mental health conditions.
  • Assess patient mental status, including risk of harm to self or others. Participate in crisis intervention and support in urgent or emergency situations.
  • Provide medication management services to a caseload of students when clinically indicated. Monitor student progress and adjust treatment as necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, FERPA, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Obtaining all required consent and health information authorization in compliance with Student Health and Counseling Services policies. 
  • Assist in health crisis intervention. 
  • Other job-related duties as assigned 

Administration

  • Maintain accurate records: documenting clinical care activities, appointments, calls, and emails with SOAP notes (daily entries in the Titanium Schedule Electronic Record System).
  • Consult on the development and implementation of office-wide mental health programming efforts. 
  • Provide education and support to Student Health and Counseling Services staff regarding psychiatric issues and coordinating care.
  • Proactively keep informed about emerging college mental health issues. 
  • Actively participate in case meetings and other staff meetings.
  • Maintain and develop appropriate community psychiatric referrals and resources.
  • Perform other job-related duties or special projects as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MD or DO from an accredited Medical School and completion of an accredited residency in psychiatry. 
  • Five (5) years or more of related clinical experience in psychiatric/mental health settings. 

LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Holds and maintains a valid and active New York State Registered Professional License, and registration to practice medicine in the State of New York. 
  • If applying as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, a Master's degree in Nursing from an accredited program is required.
  • Board Certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology or Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC). Maintains good standing with board certification and active membership.
  • DEA Registration and authority to prescribe medications, including controlled substances.
  • Holds and maintains Professional Liability Insurance.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MD or DO, strongly preferred. 
  • Experience in College Health or with board certification in a related specialty area.
  • Experience working with adolescents and/or a college student population.
  • Professional fluency in a second or multiple languages is preferred. 
  • Familiarity with College Health Electronic Record Systems, such as Titanium, is highly desirable.
  • Current valid cardiopulmonary (CPR) and first aid certification.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Knowledge of working in an academic setting, providing mental health and psychiatric services.Skill in operating a personal computer and the ability to learn new Electronic Record Systems. 
  • Knowledge of FERPA, HIPAA, and TITLE IX regulations.
  • Knowledge and understanding of health equity, cultural competence, and trauma-informed care.
  • Identify health and medical needs and recommend appropriate care and services.
  • Exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive, complex, and confidential student issues and situations. 
  • Skill in assessment, communication, and assisting students with diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. 
  • Skill in planning, organizing, and problem solving. 
  • Skill in effective verbal and written communication and conflict resolution
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing
  • Ability to learn about special populations, which includes cultural diversity as well as artists' special concerns.
  • Ability to work independently and proactively seek assistance.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with all stakeholders, including students, families, diverse groups, and individuals, especially those in distress.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OR WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Contract, On-Site position - In-person availability required.
  • Variable schedule - 9 am to 5 pm EST (15 hrs per week) Onsite with potential consideration of working from home based on business needs.
  • Ability to use standard office equipment. 
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, and move for prolonged periods during shifts
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate weight up to 50 lbs. 
  • While working remotely, will be required to maintain the same hours of work as would be performed in the office; follow the department's procedures in completing assigned job tasks; and be available during the employee's working hours via the departments established communication methods (i.e. Google chat, Slack, phone, etc.) This position may require travel during the workday.
