Hoskbrew is seeking a passionate and driven Retro Gaming Magazine Editor to create and publish a quarterly magazine focused on the vibrant world of homebrew games for classic consoles, new retro consoles, accessories, and related technology. This is a unique opportunity to shape the voice of a growing community and celebrate the creativity of independent developers.
About the Role: As the sole force behind this exciting new publication, you will be responsible for all aspects of content creation, from concept to layout. You will be the driving force behind discovering the latest homebrew projects, connecting with developers, and crafting compelling articles that resonate with retro gaming enthusiasts. This role requires a self-starter with excellent research, writing, and networking skills, as well as a deep understanding of the retro gaming landscape.
Responsibilities: - Content Curation & Creation: Actively research and identify new and upcoming homebrew games, retro consoles, accessories, and related technology. Conduct in-depth interviews with developers, capturing their insights and passion for their projects.
- Writing & Editing: Write engaging and informative articles, including game reviews, developer profiles, feature stories about the retro gaming community, and coverage of new retro hardware. Ensure all content is well-written, accurate, and adheres to the magazine's style guide.
- Visual Content: Source and/or create high-quality screenshots, gameplay videos, and other visual assets to accompany articles. Design the magazine layout, incorporating text and visuals in a visually appealing and reader-friendly manner.
- Community Engagement: Actively participate in online retro gaming communities, forums, and social media to stay abreast of the latest developments and connect with developers and enthusiasts.
- Project Management: Manage the entire magazine production process, from planning content for each issue to meeting deadlines for publication. Coordinate with the printing team to ensure timely delivery of the magazine.
- Trend Analysis: Stay informed about emerging trends in the retro gaming scene and identify opportunities for unique and insightful content.
Qualifications: - Passion for retro gaming and a deep understanding of classic game consoles, homebrew development, and the retro gaming community.
- Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
- Strong research and interviewing skills.
- Experience with graphic design and page layout software (e.g., InDesign, Affinity Publisher).
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Excellent communication and networking skills.
- Self-motivated and highly organized.
Bonus Points: - Existing connections within the retro gaming community.
- Experience with video editing and creation.
- Familiarity with web publishing and online content creation.
Compensation & Location: - Salary: To be discussed, commensurate with experience.
- Employment Type: Full-time or 1099 contract considered.
- Location: Preference for candidates willing to relocate to Gillette, Wyoming. Remote work will be considered for highly qualified candidates with demonstrated productivity.
