Job Description

The Apollo Theater Academy Theater Production Internship provides high school students with opportunities for professional and personal development as they explore careers in Technical Theater Production. Interns learn how to apply technical elements of theater such as audio engineering, lighting design, production design/ carpentry and videography, to live and recorded stage productions. Over six (6) weeks, interns are trained by and assigned to work with members of The Apollo’s production crew to learn what goes into creating events at the Apollo Theater.

Pay Rate: $16.50/hr

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:

  • Audio Engineering :  As an audio intern, you will help manage sound equipment, including microphones, speakers, and soundboards. You’ll be involved in sound design, mixing live audio during performances, troubleshooting audio issues, and ensuring that all sound elements run smoothly throughout rehearsals and shows.
  • Lighting Design :  As a lighting intern, you will assist with the design, setup, operation, and maintenance of the lighting systems for various productions. This includes understanding lighting cues, learning to operate light boards, and working closely with lighting designers to ensure that lighting enhances the overall atmosphere and effect of the show.
  • Production Design/Carpentry :  As a stage production intern, you’ll assist with the construction, painting, and maintenance of sets and props. This includes learning about scene changes, set design, and building techniques. You will work with carpenters and scenic designers to ensure the safe and efficient creation of physical elements that bring the production to life.
  • Videography :  In the video department, you will support the operation and setup of video equipment, including projectors, cameras, and video playback systems. You’ll work with the video team to create visuals that complement the performance, assist in filming, and manage video content for projections and live feeds during performances.

YOU SHOULD APPLY TO THE TECHNICAL THEATER PRODUCTION INTERNSHIP IF YOU…

  • Have a serious interest in learning about careers in technical theater.
  • Are currently in the 11th grade and will be entering the 12th grade in September 2025.
  • Enjoy working on projects as part of a team.
  • Will be available to attend the entire program, Monday – Friday, July 7 – August 15, 2025 (and special event dates, as assigned), including:
    • Mandatory Program Orientation (must attend with a parent/guardian) on the evening of Tuesday July 1,2025, and;
    • Mandatory Student Orientation sessions on July 2, 2025 from 12:00PM - 6:00PM  and July 3rd, 2025 from 12:00PM- 6:00PM

IMPORTANT DATES

MONDAY, APRIL 7th Application Deadline. Your completed application must be received by the Apollo by no later than 10:00pm. Late applications will not be accepted.  

MONDAY, MAY 5th &  WEDNESDAY, MAY 7th :
Group interviews will occur after school hours.

TUESDAY, JULY 1st There will be a mandatory Program Orientation for accepted applicants. If accepted, you will be required to attend the orientation with your parent or legal guardian.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 2nd & THURSDAY, JULY 3rd There will be a mandatory orientation for interns both days from 12:00PM - 6:00PM. 

MONDAY, JULY 7th The 2025 Summer Internship Program begins and continues for six (6) weeks through Friday, August 15th. Only applicants who can commit to attending the entire program will be considered.

SCHEDULE  

The Internship runs for six (6) weeks. Interns work Monday – Thursday on site at the theater and virtually on Fridays each week. Additionally, interns may be assigned to Apollo Theater special in person events (to include some Friday’s).

Before applying, determine whether or not you are able to commit to attending the entire program.
